On April 23d the genetics sales and technical support team held a webinar "Caring for piglets on the first day of life". Izak Huerta, PIC's technical support director in Europe, Russia and South Africa, was the invited expert.

We discussed the key activities that affect the health and well-being of piglets. The first steps are taken before the piglets are born – working with the condition of the gilts and sows, preparing the farrowing rooms and equipment. The next stage is the farrowing itself, monitoring the farrowing process, assisting sows and helping at farrowing if necessary, providing favorable conditions for piglets in the first minutes and hours of life. Proper attention during this period helps reduce the number of stillborns, improve the survival of piglets until weaning, and give them a good start for subsequent growth and development. Key factors for the welfare of newborn piglets are preventing hypothermia and promptly receiving colostrum. In the webinar, we shared specific recommendations in these areas.
